Midnight Snack

Portland, OR | Short Film (15-20 Minutes)

Written by: Brandon Goode

Horror, Mystery

A couple's intended night of Netflix and chill takes a terrifying turn after a made-up scary story brings a ravenous monster to life.

About the project

The Story

On a chilly evening in Portland, Richie, a charming film enthusiast, invites the captivating Jackson over for a nightcap after connecting on a dating app. Eager to set the mood, Richie puts on his favorite horror movie, but Jackson isn't a fan, as he's easily frightened.

Deciding to have some fun, Richie playfully scares Jackson by making up a story about a menacing monster hiding in his basement. Jackson doesn't take the story well, so Richie apologizes and agrees to refocus on their intimate evening.

However, they're soon interrupted by strange noises escaping from Richie’s basement, transforming their night into terror as they chillingly discover whether the monster from the story may be real after all.

The Why

In today's dating culture, especially within the gay community, dating apps have made it easier to connect with others in more inclusive spaces. While these apps have their positives, they have also led to a false sense of security when meeting online connections, especially in their homes. Recognizing these risks and drawing from my own dating app experiences, I was inspired to write "Midnight Snack" to contribute to the underrepresented genre of Black horror.

This story delves into the complexities of the human experience, touching on themes such as inherited family trauma, the pitfalls of modern dating culture, the presence of figurative and literal monsters in our society, and the lurking dangers that hide in the shadows. Through its sharp and gripping concept, "Midnight Snack" will keep audiences engaged and guessing about what will happen next, while also confronting the inevitable twists and turns that await.
